Overview

Spantik or the Golden Peak, is situated in the Nagar Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan in the Karakoram Range with a height of 7,027 m above sea level. The mountain lies in the surroundings of the Biafo Glacier and the Hispar Glacier. It is renowned for its pyramid shape, making it a popular destination for mountaineers and adventurers. The first successful ascent of Spantik Peak was made in 1955 by a German-Austrian expedition led by Karl Kramer. The team reached the summit via the southeast ridge. Since then, Spantik has become a popular destination for climbers. Many routes have been established, with the southeast and south ridges being the most commonly used. While summiting Spantik climbers face difficulties, especially in terms of altitude and unpredictable weather. Some are due to crevasses, seracs, and steep slopes, particularly in the later stages. Usually, Dassu stands as the base camp for the Spantik Expedition. From here, climbers proceed through a series of higher camps, acclimatizing themselves to the altitude before attempting the summit push. Climbers planning to ascend Spantik are required to obtain a permit from the higher authorities as for every other peak. The Pakistan Alpine Club and the Ministry of Tourism are responsible for managing these permits. Spantik Peak stands as a symbol of natural beauty and adventure in the Karakoram Range. Its accessibility, combined with the spectacular landscapes and cultural richness of the surrounding area, makes it a very popular destination for climbers seeking a challenging yet rewarding experience in the high-altitude wilderness of northern Pakistan.
